Green Party members were surprised to learn that the Sudbury Society last week gave its approval to the revised application submitted by Churchill Retirement Living, calling it ‘a great improvement on the original.”
Sudbury Green campaigner Laura Smith said, “We would hardly call it a great improvement. All they have changed is the colour of the bricks and some other small details. The block of flats will still loom 40 feet high over the junction and it will still be built on land that has always been public open space.”
Green campaigners joined the Belle Vue Action Group protest in the town last week, when demonstrators crossed the road at the location of the proposed new crossing.
Green campaigner from Great Cornard, Ruth Hendry said “Everyone from Sudbury and Cornard knows that this is the wrong place for a crossing. It’s dangerous and will only add to the traffic problems in town.”
“What we want to see is the original idea where the front is opened up making Belle Vue visible and accessible for all. The Council Leader has said that a new entrance will go ahead even if plans for the flats fall through. If they can afford the entrance without the money from Churchill, why can’t they just build the entrance at the front?”
