Post Office Closure - Sudbury
Babergh Green Councillors, led by Sudbury South West member Laura Smith and Deputy Leader of the Council Deborah Saw, have challenged the Post Office over the announcement that the only branch in Sudbury was due to close on Friday 25th August. The closure of the branch that moved into Borehamgate shopping centre in 2022 following the closure of the WH Smith's shop in Market Hill would have been a huge loss to the town.
Laura said "Its outrageous that people in Sudbury will be left without a Post Office at such short notice leaving the town without this vital service".
With the closure of so many bank branches the Post Office can end up being the only option for people to do their banking in person. While many services are available online the loss of a post office branch is one more important business gone from our ever decreasing high street outlets.
In an effort to fight this loss Laura contacted the press and Councillor Deborah Saw wrote to the CEO of Post Office Counters Ltd as well as local MP James Cartlidge, chair of the APPG for Post Offices Marion Fellows MP and The minister responsible for The Post Office, Kevin Hollinrake, demanding that action be taken.
It has now been confirmed by Green District Councillor Tim Regester and James Cartlidge that the post office will no longer be closing and will continue to operate in its current location.
Although it is good to hear that the site has a reprieve, it is important that we continue to fight against the loss of service to residents of our towns and villages.
