Council ban giving of live animals as prizes
Babergh council, along with Mid Suffolk have banned the giving of live animals as prizes
on their land. A decision on the proposal, that was initially raised by Babergh Green Party Councillor Jessie Carter, was reached unanimously during Babergh and Mid Suffolk cabinet meetings, and will be applied to any land owned or controlled by the council.
Any attempt to give away animals as prizes, even goldfish in a bag, will be prohibited. The RSPCA started a campaign to ban this practice in 2021 and they hope that a crackdown on the practice by councils will act as a deterrent that may go ahead. Although instances of this happening nowadays this is one small step in bringing animal welfare standards up to where they should be.
