At the August Council Meeting Green Party Councillor Leigh Jamieson called for the council to reaffirm its commitment to the climate emergency. Leigh said "Although the council declared an emergency in 2019, following the recent elections there are fourteen new Councillors and it's right that they have the opportunity to express their wishes".
Leigh also called for the council to join the UK100 network. This is a group of local authorities from across the country that have pledged to transition to Net Zero by 2045. By working together and drawing on shared information, and learning, the local authorities can develop best practices to reach their goal. Suffolk County Council is already a member of this group.
Leigh said "by drawing on a bigger pool of knowledge we will be able to learn from other people's successes and failures that will help us to reach Net Zero".
The motion was fully approved at Council and cabinet have agreed to join the UK100 on Tuesday 5th September.
